Pros And Cons Of A Wheel Lift Tow Truck

While there’s plenty of tow truck configurations out there, most operation use just two (we’ll leave wreckers for another discussion.)

They can be useful in a variety of situations and there are different challenges tow truck drivers face when using them. Although different people have different preferences when it comes to the tow truck they want to hire, they all do a good job at towing the vehicles. For this post, we’ll focus on the wheel lift tow trucks.

How Is The Car Towed?

In a wheel lift tow truck, the cars are towed using a durable metal yoke. This will be fitted either on the front or rear wheels of the vehicle to be towed. Once the front or rear wheels are secured, it will then lift either the front or back part of the car off the ground. The other set of wheels that aren’t attached to the metal yoke will be left to freely roll when the car is towed.

Advantages Of Using Wheel Lift Tow Trucks

Wheel lift tow trucks are smaller than the flatbed tow trucks. That makes them much more suitable when towing in tighter spots. Aside from the smaller size, it is also great for areas that have a low clearance. The car isn’t totally lifted so the height isn’t significantly high.

The smaller size of the tow truck would also mean that it consumes less fuel. This would also mean that towing with this kind of tow truck would be much cheaper as compared to using other tow trucks.

Disadvantages Of Using A Wheel Lift Tow Truck

Even with the cheaper cost, some people still wouldn’t want their car towed with a wheel lift tow truck. This is because only two wheels are raised and the other two are left to touch the ground.

This means the wheels can be worn out or used through the transport. For other vehicles, this might be okay but for those who are transporting pristine cars to the show, this cannot be tolerated. Additionally, if the vehicle owner made a mistake of locking the two wheels that touch the ground, it can cause damage to the whole car.
